How Chinese Medicine Supports Sperm Health and Overall Health
Sperm quality gives us insight into your overall health. Stress, poor sleep, long hours, alcohol, and little downtime all take a toll. Sperm take about three months to develop, so the next 12 weeks of changes are the ones that count.
Here's what acupuncture can do for you:
Sperm health. Reviews of clinical trials show acupuncture can improve sperm motility (how well sperm move) and concentration (count).
Stress. Acupuncture helps calm your body's stress response, and chronic stress is linked to lower sperm quality.
Sleep. It's widely used to help people fall asleep and sleep more soundly, which matters for the hormones involved in sperm production.
Aches and tension. Desk and work strain in the back, neck, and shoulders often improves with regular treatment. Acupuncture also helps with athletic performance.
We pair weekly sessions with simple, practical advice on sleep, food, lifestyle, and supplements, so we are always working to improve your overall health while you work on sperm health.
What to Expect
A thorough first visit. We talk through your health history, semen analysis if you have one, sleep, stress, digestion, and daily habits.
Weekly acupuncture for about 12 weeks. This lines up with the roughly three-month cycle of sperm development. Sessions are relaxing and stress-relieving. We use acupuncture points on your arms, legs, lower abdomen, and lower back, and never in the genital area.
Support beyond the treatment room. Depending on your pattern, we may add Chinese herbal medicine, moxibustion, simple lifestyle changes, targeted supplements, and nutritional guidance.
A check-in on progress. Many people repeat a semen analysis with their doctor after about three months, and we adjust your plan as things change.
LGBTQ+ Affirming Fertility Care and Sperm Donor Support
There are many paths to parenthood, and every one of them is welcome here. We support same-sex couples, single parents by choice, trans and nonbinary parents, and families building with a known or banked donor. If you're using donor sperm, acupuncture can support the person carrying by regulating the cycle, supporting ovulation and timing, and easing stress ahead of at-home insemination, IUI, or IVF. We use the names and pronouns you share with us and never assume who is carrying, donating, or parenting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is acupuncture safe for men trying to conceive?
Yes. When acupuncture is performed by a licensed acupuncturist using sterile, single-use needles, it is considered a low-risk therapy. We always review your health history and medications first. At Nido Wellness, our acupuncturist is board-certified as a fertility acupuncturist and trained at the highest level possible, so you can rest assured you are in safe hands.
How long before I might see changes?
Sperm take about three months to develop, so we generally start with a 12-week course of care with a treatment plan for diet, lifestyle, and supplement support. Every body responds differently, and we can't promise a specific result, but many people feel calmer and more energized along the way.
What if my semen analysis is normal?
If you are unable to conceive naturally and you have a normal semen analysis we still want to see you to optimize sperm health and overall health. A normal semen analysis is not the whole picture, it’s just one piece of the puzzle so optimizing your chances of a pregnancy can still go a long way. Unexplained infertility is 40% male-factor, so we want to do everything we can to support your chances of a successful, healthy pregnancy.
Does acupuncture replace seeing a urologist or fertility doctor?
Nope. We're a supportive part of your care team. If your semen analysis is abnormal, or you have pain, swelling, or other symptoms, please see a urologist or fertility specialist, and we'll gladly work alongside them.
Can I do acupuncture during IUI, IVF, or ICSI?
Yes. We highly recommend acupuncture for fertility during any interventions like IUI, and for 3 months in preparation for IVF, with or without ICSI. Many couples combine acupuncture with fertility treatment, and we can coordinate with your fertility clinic so your care stays aligned. Acupuncture is a safe addition to your integrative reproductive medicine plan to optimize your chances of a healthy pregnancy.
Can my partner and I come in together?
Absolutely. We love supporting both partners during your fertility journey. You can schedule appointments back-to-back for an acupuncture date, and we build a combined plan for couples. We book you separately for the initial consultation so you can have individualized time to dive into your overall health and reproductive health history.
